Juicebox Vol 1, Side F, Track 3: “Cigarettes and Whiskey” by The Charming Beards.
“Cigarettes and Whiskey” is a very personal song to Katie. “It’s a song that took 8 years and 5 minutes to write.” Katie explained “I was in a relationship that ended after 8 years. The song almost wrote itself.” For a while, the song was played as a way to let go of the past when letting go seemed like the hardest thing to do.
The rest of the band has formed their own connection to “Cigarettes and Whiskey,” bringing out intense, raw emotions during each performance. Lisa added a strong melody to the chorus by experimenting with fingerpicking on the bass. Jordan’s solo at the end harmonizes with Katie’s lyrics to elicit a cathartic crescendo in the song, and to push home the idea of moving on. Each member adds a new dynamic to the song, yet they remain perfectly synchronized with the overall idea. “Cigarettes and Whiskey” is much more than a song. This week’s Juicebox is a track you surely don’t want to miss.
