Juicebox Vol 1, Side F, Track 4: “Bless Me Father” by The Charming Beards.
“Bless Me Father” was originally written 10 years ago while Katie was performing in a different project. Katie remembers “I was raised Catholic, and that influences a lot of my writing. I was also in an American Literature course at the time and we were reading books like ‘The Lottery’ and ‘Scarlet Letter’, books that centered around a sort of ‘pariah’.” Katie took inspiration from both of these sources and created a story about a prostitute’s daughter who was an outcast despite her devotion to god. It’s a fictional story that was imagined with these narratives in mind.
Katie first played the song solo and developed most of the melodies and lyrics herself. She later brought it to the rest of The Charming Beards to help shape the full band version of the song. “Bless Me Father” was also to be feature in the Netflix original film AWOL but was later cut from the movie. “I played the song in a scene and then handed my guitar off to Lola Kirke.” Katie can still be seen in several scenes of the movie as an extra. So grab some popcorn and sit back as we see The Charming Beards perform “Bless Me Father.”
