Juicebox Vol 1, Side E, Track 3: “Marooned” by Alma Mater.
“All my problems, they disappear when I’m gone” shouts lead singer Vinny, pulling you out of your seat and into the song with the first verse. “Marooned” comes at you with a harder edge, continuing the theme of the Cloud Cover EP. The track explores the struggles of seclusion caused by failing relationships and self doubt, driving you to feel like you’re marooned on an island by yourself. The angst filled verses build tension until the anthemic chorus explodes and lets out thoughts of self doubt.
Marooned was Ryan’s first time working with Alma Mater, though he wasn’t a member of the band when it was written. “I was friends with the old guitarist and he was showing me some of the stuff they were working on.” Ryan remembers. “They kept playing the very end of the ‘Marooned’ and this lead guitar part came into my head. I showed it to the guys and it made it into the song. Little did I know I’d join the band a few months later.”
“Marooned” gives us another great example of Alma Mater’s ability to harmonize and use tactly placed melodic breakdowns to drive their message home. Get ready and don’t get left behind with this week’s Juicebox, “Marooned”.
