Juicebox Vol 1, Side E, Track 1: “Dead Season” by Alma Mater.
Alma Mater’s Juicebox debut begins with the melodic “Dead Season” from the Cloud Cover EP. An experimentation in dynamics by Alma Mater, this track balances out the quieter verses with melodic choruses and ends with an explosive breakdown to release all of that built up tension. “Most of the songs on the EP are introspective, so “Dead Season” is mainly about trying to reassure oneself everything will work out under difficult circumstances, even when it feels like there’s no way out,” says Jerry.
The track was originally written for a demo released in early 2016 while Alma Mater was still taking shape. At that point the band was made up of Jerry, Vinny, and a bass player they had performed with previously. They had written several tracks and wanted to add something unique to end “Dead Season” that would set it apart from everything else they were doing at the time. “We came up with the ending and after jamming it a few times, our bassist proposed adding pauses and hard instrumental hits during the last measures. It worked seamlessly, and it was one of the first times we all collectively agreed that we had something really cool,” added Jerry. Get ready for the dead of winter with Alma Mater’s “Dead Season.”
